Position the new shape in front of the pumpkin as shown.

Apply an Elliptical Fill with orange on the outside and yellow in the center. Position the center of the fill over the triangle of the nose.

With the fill still selected, select the Transparency Tool (the wine glass button). Change the Transparency Shape (British for type) to Elliptical. Click the center node in the fill and move the Transparency slider on the Infobar to 0%. Click the outside node (either one will do), and change the Transparency slider setting to 70%.

As you can see, this softens the effect of the light spilling out of the pumpkin onto the brown rectangle.

The area where the two rectangles meet is a little too sharp. We can soften this junction by applying a small amount of Linear Transparency in the 20 pixel area where the bottom rectangle overlaps the top rectangle.

Select the bottom rectangle, select the Transparency Tool, then select Linear from the drop down list.

Adjust the fill path arrows as shown by dragging the end nodes until the start and end are positioned over the overlapping portion.
