Reduce the size of the spiral to 50%. (Enter 50 in the Scale Width height or width text entry window and press Enter to apply the change.

Change the fill color as shown.

HOW TO: Select the spiral, open the Color Editor by clicking the small color wheel icon to the left of the screen palette. Select RGB Color Model from the drop down list of Color Models and enter 204 in the R box, 153 in the G box and 0 in the B box (red, green and blue). The color is applied automatically and there is no need to press Enter.

Duplicate the spiral and press the Flip Horizontally and Flip Vertically icons on the Infobar (the mirrored triangles).

Position the two spirals as shown so the ends are slightly overlapping.

Select the two spirals.

Create an in place duplicate (Clone) by pressing Ctrl K or selecting Clone from the Edit menu.

With the two spirals selected, enter 90 in the Angle of Selection text entry box on the Infobar (to the right of the tiny lock icon with the round arrow icon) and press Enter to apply the rotation.

TIP: You can also use the rotate and drop method. Select the two spirals, click again to enter rotate/skew mode. Hold down the Ctrl key to constrain the rotation, and rotate the two spirals 90 degrees. Before you release the left mouse button, click the right mouse button to drop the duplicate.

Select all four spirals.

From the Arrange menu, select Combine Shapes > Add Shapes.

(I have used outlines again so you can see the effect of this combining action).
