Disable Snap To Guides. Enable Snap To Objects by pressing the red magnet icon on the Infobar.

Select the front X and add a little transparency with the Transparency Tool to show the letter behind.

Zoom in as close to the two letters as possible. Using the Pen Tool, click four line segments to make the top left portion of the X (shown in pale yellow). This is like connect-the-dots. With Snap To Objects enabled, the anchor points should snap to the four points. Placing the last anchor point on top of the first, completes the shape enabling it to be filled. Repeat this step for the other sides.

NOTE: Some of the sides might be a bit off. Zoom in tight and edit the sides using the Shape Editor Tool. When the point being dragged is about to snap (like I am sometimes), the icon next to the cursor changes to a small magnet.

Repeat the process for the A.

 

The R is going to be a bit tricky because of the rounded shapes.

Select the R and Convert to Editable Shapes (Arrange menu). The text is now defined by a series of points which you can see if you select the text and then select the Shape Editor Tool.

Ignore the diagonal line on top of the Rs. I changed my mind. Sorry for the inconvenience. Really. It won't happen again. I promise. Honest. It was a stupid mistake. That's all. I don't know what I could have been thinking.
