In the summer when it gets hot and the skies fill with herds of small puffy white clouds, one frequently sees virga coming from the clouds. Virga is rain that falls but dries before reaching the ground. The effect is like a translucent curtain.

We can make some of our own virga. Create a shape similar to the one shown here using the Freehand and Brush Tool.

Apply a Linear fill dragging the fill path on a diagonal.

Add the starting color using the HSV values shown.

With the Color Editor still open, select the ending control point, then drag the Color Picker (the eyedropper) over the area of the sky as shown. This helps to fade the end of the virga as it disappears into the air.

We could have used a Linear transparency to do this but we will need the transparency for the next step as you will quickly see.

Apply a Fractal Plasma, Mix transparency. Drag both ends of the fill path arrows very close together as shown to create the sheets of falling rain. Add a healthy dose of feathering to further soften the virga.

Bring some of the clouds in front of the virga.
