Select the duplicate copy of the joined lines and press the Flip Horizontally icon on the Infobar to flop the line.

Using the Shape Editor Tool, click on the line, in approximately the place a a 45 degree diagonal line might intersect the line, to add a new control point. Press the Break at Points icon on the Infobar. Select and delete the lower right portion (shown as a blue dotted line). 

Select one of the diagonal lines and press Ctrl C to copy its attributes. Select the new line and press Shift Ctrl A to paste the line attributes (or select Paste Attributes from the Edit menu).

Duplicate the a character.

Group (Ctrl G or Arrange > Group) the two diagonal lines. Arrange the line letters as shown here. Group the four letters. Make several duplicate of these letters. We will be using them several times in this tutorial. If you have any left over at the end of the tutorial, you can donate them to your favorite charity.

Delete the squares, we are finished with them.
