As you'll see in the final image, I went a little overboard creating a smaller checkerboard sphere that reflects in the larger sphere. Make a Duplicate (Ctrl-D) of the sphere, then make another Duplicate of the smaller sphere and Ungroup (Ctrl-U) the three elements (the checkered sphere and the two transparent overlays). Apply a Stained Glass Transparency, 70% to the checkerboard sphere. Select each of the top two transparent overlays (Stained Glass and Bleach) and Apply the Sky fill from the Fill Gallery. You will now have three transparent levels. Group them and apply a Default Envelope as shown. The idea is to narrow and curve the reflection.
