i/us -- The June 98 Salon Page 4

We're going to animate the hand to raise the index finger to the lips of the profile person as if to say, "Hush!" In order to do this we'll need to break the symbol apart and reconstruct the face, hand and rounded square as separate elements.

Make the symbol to 2 1/4" Use the Rectangle Tool to construct a 2 1/4 inch square the same size as the symbol. With the Rectangle Tool still selected, click on the Round Corner icon on the Property Bar (it's the icon that looks like a rounded corner!), and drag the corner node as shown until the rounded square matches the symbol. Select the rounded square and from the Arrange menu select Convert to Editable Shapes. (This is like DRAW's Convert To Curves, or Illustrator's Make Paths command).

Select the symbol with the Selector Tool (the arrow pointer) and from the Arrange menu select Convert to Editable Shapes. Re-select the symbol and Ungroup it (Arrange--Ungroup). Now Ungroup it once again. (Don't ask!). Select the symbol again and from the Arrange Menu select Break Apart. This separates the eye portion from the face and square portion. Set the fill to none but leave the outline.

With the symbol selected, select the Shape Editor Tool (the squiggly line icon), marquee select the nodes shown circled here, and click on the Break At Points icon (shown). This function does exactly what you think it does, it breaks the path into several sections.
