Paste a copy of the ellipses onto the page (Shift Ctrl-V) I've separated the top and bottom shapes to make the next step easier to visualize (see). Group all the red ellipses (Ctrl-G). Select the group and then the top shape and from the Arrange menu select Combine Shapes--Subtract Shapes. Repeat the process by grouping the orange ellipses and Subtracting them from the bottom shape.

Your drawing will now look like the one on the right. It doesn't? You have odd lumps sticking out of the the bottom shape? No big deal. Draw a rectangle covering only the part of the elliptical shape extending beyond the rectangle and Subtract it (Combine Shapes--Subtract Shapes). Do the same for the other side. Now does it look like the illustration on the right? Cool!
