Creating the Bitmap Brush Shape for the Fire Brush

Draw several wide crossed lines with the Freehand and Brush tool, then Arrange > Join Shapes.

Convert Line to Shape (Arrange menu)

Apply a good amount of feathering using the Feathering slider on the Infobar (to the right of the Gallery icons).

Select the Shadow Tool and add a Wall Shadow with a blur

Select Convert to Editable Shapes (Arrange menu) and ungroup (Ctrl u ). Select the shadow only and select the Fill Tool (F5). Select Fractal Clouds from the Fill Type drop list menu on the Infobar.

Delete the original shape but keep the shadow. Select the Transparency Tool (F6) and select Stained Glass from the Transparency Type drop down list. Add a Wall shadow with 0% Shadow Blur and with 0% Shadow Transparency.

Convert to Editable Shapes, Ungroup. Delete the object and keep the shadow. Select the shadow and click the red color swatch on the screen palette.

Now you have the base object with which to create the fire brush effect.
