At Speed This is a reprise of an airbrush painting I did for my first show in Vancouver in 1989. I did the original in India ink, which gave it a nice sepia-tone look. Over the years, I've had many requests for a colour version of the print and I finally decided in May that I would have a go at it. Here's the reference to pop culture again: the idea for the original painting, and therefore this one as well, came from a half-second clip in a 1987 Porsche commercial touting the company's racing heritage. It was a split-second yet tantalizing glimpse of a 936 Turbo blasting along Le Mans' Mulsanne Straight at over 220 mph, right on the edge of control, a very powerful image. At the time I had been reading about the Ferrari and Porsche prototypes at Le Mans and so that brief glimpse led straight to this image. The background was an exercise in the rules of perspective and depth of field.
