Some simpler custom transparencies can be created in other less lengthy ways using single shapes with feathering, or blends etc., but the most complex ones can’t. Such custom transparencies are not as flexible as any preset transparency, but once the process is familiarised, making any alterations to the original objects comprising the transparency mask should take no time at all with Xara’s dynamic user interface. It is possibly a good idea to make a new layer for all mask objects in case future alterations are needed.

This ‘custom’ transparency creation is the only way of creating non-flat transparencies in the latest version of Adobe Illustrator CS2, which, relatively, doesn’t have an interface that facilitates practical or productive experimentation.
