The technique works well to create 3D plastic text.

It also can be used to create great translucent text. Here’s how I achieved the effect above.:

• Create the 3D text (no shadow yet)
• Group everything
• Add a Floor shadow using the Shadow Tool
• Convert to Editable Shapes
• Ungroup
• Select the shadow and move it to the front. This creates the illusion that we are seeing the shadow through the text.
