Checklist

For those who prefer a check list of things to do:

1. Try Auto Levels (Image > Adjustment > Auto Levels). If that does not work, and often it will not. (Edit > Undo) and try step 2.

2. Look at the Levels histogram (Image > Adjustment > Levels). If the histogram is not a smooth curve, all bunched up in one place, adjust the outside triangles (Shadows and Highlights) looking at the image with Preview checked so you can see the results. Experiment with the midtones triangle.

3. If there is a white area of the image that has a color cast try using the Set White Point eyedropper tool (the 3rd of the three eyedroppers in the Levels dialog.

4. If the image looks slightly washed out after you adjust the levels, and if there is an area that is supposed to be black, try the Set Black Point eyedropper tool, (the 1st of the 3 eyedroppers).

5. If the eyedroppers do not work (Ctrl z to undo an eyedropper sample), then try adding a small amount of Contrast (5-10). (Image > Adjustments > Brightness and Contrast). This can intensify the color but it can also lose subtle detail such as the detail in white clouds so use it sparingly.

6. If the image is lacking sharpness, try a small amount of Unsharp Mask (Filters > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask...). I like to keep the Radius and Threshold settings around 3. Experiment with the Amount slider. Too much Unsharp Masking may cause a halo effect around the objects. If this happens, move the slider to the left until the halo disappears.

This is what works for me.
