Lady and Tiger Tea Table by Mary E. Carter The image above was taken by a professional photographer. The 4 x 5 color transparency was transferred onto a disc as a high resolution TIFF image. It is obviously too dark. And in this case, since the image was created by my wife, I have the original table with which to compare the color. The Levels histogram reveals what we can see, the image is too heavily weighted in the dark values. I moved both the midtones and highlight triangles to the left resulting in the improved image shown below. The color are closer to the actual image but overall the image has a pink cast. Notice the pinkish gray background at the bottom of the image. In the Levels dialog, I selected the Set Gray Point tool, (the center eyedropper tool) and clicked on the medium gray area. Finally I applied a small amount of Unsharp Mask which enhanced the detail and actually makes the colors a little richer in the process.
