Shown here is the Galleries Toolbar (normally found docked at the top of the Infobar).

TIP: You can undock most of Xara's toolbars, creating floating menus, by simply dragging them onto the page. You can dock them by dragging the toolbar's title bar back to the Infobar.

The Galleries include: a. the Color Gallery, b. the Layers Gallery, c. the Frames Gallery (only active when the Animation Window is open), d. the Bitmap Gallery, e. the Line Gallery, f. the Fonts Gallery, g. the Clip Art Gallery, and i. the Names Gallery.

Each gallery is different and yet all look and operate in a similar manner.

The Color Gallery displays all the named colors (the square colors on the screen palette that have names like red, red orange, etc.), the web safe colors used in the current drawing (if the colors were selected from the screen palette, not mixed), plus any custom colors you create. Also found on the bottom of the Color Gallery are special palettes of colors including Pantone Process Colors (CMYK) in coated and uncoated versions, and Pantone Solid to Process, the CMYK equivalents to the solid Pantone spot colors.

The Layers Gallery is useful for organizing complex drawings and placing different objects on their own layers. When creating Xara's Button Bars, Xara places each button state on its own layer.

The Frames Gallery is only active when an animation window is open and more than one frame has been created. One of the key benefits of the Frames Gallery is the ability to reorder frames by dragging and dropping a frame to a new location.

The Bitmap Gallery stores each bitmap object created in, or imported into Xara. Even if the bitmap has been deleted a copy remains in the gallery until the Xara window is closed, at which time any bitmaps not used in the file are deleted. Bitmaps can be traced in the Bitmap Gallery , and tiling bitmap images can be applied to the entire page, which is useful when you create web graphics with transparent backgrounds that will be displayed over a patterned background.

The Line Gallery contains a myriad of things to do with lines including arrowheads,  dashed line patterns, line weights, end caps and line joins, and new to Xara X, brush shapes in two flavors, Natural Media, and Novelty brushes and Stroke Shapes which add a thick-thin quality to a line. Pressure sensitivity is supported with these new brush and stroke shapes.

The Fonts Gallery contains a listing of all the installed fonts on your computer. You can browse through the fonts sampler and apply a font to selected text. You can install or uninstall fonts and you can get fonts from the Xara X disc or from the Xara web site.

The Clip Art Gallery contains folders of clip art images. These images are initially on the Xara X disc permitting you to only add the folders of clip art you need at any given time. You can store the clip art folders on your hard drive or import the images from your Xara X CD disc. You can also get Clipart from the Xara web site. You can easily create your own clip art folders complete with thumbnail images of the folder's contents. We'll cover this in one of the upcoming installments.

The Fill Gallery contains folders that contain bitmap fill patterns. These pattern folders are found on the Xara X CD and can be added and removed in the same manner as the folders in the Clip Art Gallery. These fills can be dragged onto the page, imported onto the page, or applied directly to selected objects and text. Fills, once applied, can be rotated and/or scaled using the Fill Tool.

The Names Gallery is totally new in Xara X. It catalogs all fonts, colors, bitmaps, and named objects on the page. Using the Names Gallery, you can quickly identify each use of a certain color, or font or named image and more. Named images can be exported from the Names Gallery as bitmaps, sliced images, or stretched images, (buttons that automatically stretch to accommodate more text, for example). The Names Gallery is a powerful organizational tool.
