Peace Pipe started out about 1975. When I first got married, we didn't have enough money for Christmas presents. So I decided to resurrect a lost talent and paint some Indian pictures with oils. I found the original black & white photo of this in a library book and decided to give it a shot. It turned out much better than expected, since I'd only done two oils of landscapes before this in a 9th grade art class. I decided to resurrect the old guy a second time with Xara. It took much less time than with oils, only about 2 hours. I layered numerous transparent fills for everything except the medicine bag and the grass in the foreground. I used a fill from a photo that I took of sagebrush and scaled down for the grass and a canvas bitmap fill for the bag. The sky is just a fractal cloud fill with a white linear transparency on top. The mountains came from a brown fractal plasma fill with a green fractal cloud transparency overlaid on top.
