Select both joined link units and Arrange -- Combine Shapes- Intersect Shapes. You will be left with only the areas where the links overlapped. Paste (Shift Ctrl-P) the links back on the page in the same position you copied them and send them to the back (Ctrl-B). Select the intersections and Arrange--Break Shapes.
