A reader from New York, New York recently wrote, "I'm beginning to think you have a sphere complex!" Another reader, who resides in the Netherlands, wrote recently, "Is there any way to create an elliptical band that is transparent in the center?" Beats me. But hey, why not try to address both issues in one tutorial? With this lofty goal, this month we'll attempt to create a square world with transparent square rings (an oxymoron?) to encompass it. You more clever readers will know how to translate these techniques into circles and ellipses. We've got a lot of ground (albeit flat) to cover, so let's get moving.
