Digging in deeper and using the previous technique on color images!

Example 6: This studio shot photo shown below is a typical high-key image. The pixels are pretty evenly distributed in all areas but concentrated in the highlights. So, even though there are a couple of peaks on the right side of the histogram, this does not mean the photograph is overexposed. As you can clearly see, there are some low bumps along the length of the histogram.

As usual we can try a couple of things and this time the Auto button gives us a pleasant result. If you manually pick the white and black points you should try picking white from the finger nail and the black either from the center of an eye or from the shadows around the neck. Move the gray slider to the right to bring out midtone details.

If you think that the image looks too cool when manually picking the black and white points and cannot find a suitable neutral gray spot, try adjusting the midtone sliders for the Red and Blue channels:

Add some red by moving the red midtone slider to the right. This will decrease the amount of cyan (= light blue, remember?) and remove some of the blue by moving blue midtone slider to the left.

Tip: Teeth are not always a good target for white even though tooth paste companies insist that your teeth will turn white when you use their products! Teeth are more or less yellow (sometimes brown, but a yellow cast is preferable). So when you do color correction you should not try to make teeth completely white as they will look unnatural. The same thing goes with the whites of the eye. They are not completely white and making them so will make the person in the photo look very scary with glowing eyes!
