Step-By-Step

To add even more drama to this Southwestern panorama, I’ve tossed in a skull. I drew the outline in Draw using photographs for reference. I did not copy the photos directly but used parts from several to avoid copyright infringement. I colored the skull in Xara using very pale yellows and tans. I added a solid lavender oval to which I applied an Elliptical Transparency to give it an eery glow. I did the same with the smoldering red eyeballs, using an orange circle with a Circular Transparency.

I created a horn shape using connected lines which I converted to curves with Xara’s Shape Editor tool. Just make a series of connected lines and then use the Shape Editor tool to drag the segments into curves. In Draw, select all the nodes and in the Node Edit menu make them all To Curves. I applied a marble fill to the horn from Xara’s Fill Gallery-Marble library. I created a duplicate of the horn and filled it black. I created a white highlight shape inside the horn, blended the two shapes, placed the black and white blend over the marble horn, and applied a Linear Transparency-Bleach to give the horn shape.
