We’ll be viewing our firecracker in the “exploded view” which should make the Florida and Chicago area contingents happy. Use the Pen (Line) Tool to draw some frayed edges to both sections of the firecracker.

An important element in any deep space illustration not suprisingly is deep space. If you have a NASA image that’s swell. If not, you can create a tile like this one in CorelDRAW using the Texture Fill “Night Sky”. I've cheated slightly by adding some very, very subtle Lens Flares in Photoshop, er, Paint. I always get the two confused. We’ll import the tile as a bitmap (your choice--TIFF, JPEG, BMP, mox nix) and use Xara’s Bitmap Gallery Fill function to fill our universe.
