NOTE: Ron created his illustration at the size he normally works. To make it easier to see, the step illustrations in this tutorial have been enlarged 300%. To make your drawing look the same as the illustrations in this tutorial, set your Zoom factor at 300%.

My images get very complex and often contain hundreds and hundreds of objects. To make my life easier I create different layers for different parts of the illustration. So, if I just need to work on the tire, as in the case of this tutorial, I just make the other layers invisible.

In this tutorial we will use 2 layers, one called Wheel and one called Tire. In the Layer Gallery (F10), create a new layer and name it Wheel. Create another layer and call it Tire. (The tire layer needs to be below the wheel layer).

Select the title bar for the Wheel layer. In the Wheel layer, create an ellipse 49.1 pixels wide by 62.1 pixels tall.

With the ellipse selected, key in -5.60 in the Skew Angle of Selection box on the Infobar and press Enter to apply the change. Apply 1 pixel feathering using the Change Size of Feather Region slider

Copy the new ellipse (Ctrl c). In the Layer Gallery (F10), select the Tire layer and paste a copy of the ellipse using Shift Ctrl v or Edit > Paste in Place (Xara Extreme only).

Increase the size to 80 pixels wide by 100 pixels tall. Change the fill color to RGB 108, 108, 108 or in Hexadecimal, 6c6c6c.

In the Layer Gallery, uncheck the edit layer box (under the pointer icon) for the Wheel layer. This locks the contents of the Wheel layer and prevents accidental edits or deletions.

Clone (Ctrl k) the large ellipse (shown in red outline). (A clone is an in-place duplicate). Reduce the size to 95%. Apply a black fill and set the feathering slider to 4.5pix.
