I found that symbol creation is very easy in XARA, 'cause the Boolean operations such as Add and Intersect can be put right on the toolbar and accessed quickly. I exported the characters to Illustrator format, and then used FontLab 3 (hint: buy this is you love creating fonts) to add the kerning, padding, hinting, and other PostScript conventions that make a font a professional, commercial font. CorelDRAW can export a font, but leaves a lot of finesse out of the finished product. XARA produces accurate, tight picture or text characters, and as always, it's a fun environment in which to play.
